Dr. Ahalya Susarla, age 78, of Vestal, New York, passed away on Friday, December 27, 2024. She is survived by her daughter, Archana Susarla of Vestal, New York; son Dr. Srinivas Susarla, daughter-in-law Dr. Harlyn Susarla and granddaughters Raina and Ella of Seattle, Washington; son Manoj Susarla of New York, New York; as well as several brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews, including Saurabh and Monika Vishnubhakat and their son Sai, of Short Hills, New Jersey. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr, Vyaghreshwarudu Susarla, her parents Dr. Medha Dakshina Murthy Vishnubhakat and Vedavati Vishnubhakat, sister Swaraj Gupta, brother Dr. Satyanarayan Vishnubhakat and sister-in-law Aruna Vishnubhakat.
Born on April 27, 1946 in Kanker, Madhya Pradesh, India, as the eldest daughter of seven children, Dr. Susarla was actively involved in helping raise her four younger siblings and was fondly referred to as “little mother.” After completing her medical education at MGM Medical College in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India, she immigrated to the United States in 1973 to start a life with her husband, Dr. V. Susarla. She then completed her residency training in internal medicine at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan. She and her family subsequently settled in upstate New York in 1982. Following her husband’s untimely death in 1989, Dr. Susarla raised her three children as a single mother while maintaining a robust medical practice, serving the Southern Tier for over 35 years.
Known the world over as an exceptionally strong, compassionate, kind and generous individual, she was uniformly beloved by her children, grandchildren, extended family, patients, colleagues and community. She believed deeply in helping those less fortunate. To honor this spirit, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St Jude Children's Hospital or Shriners Children's.
Her children would like to thank Dr. Ronald Harris and the Oncology team at United Health Services for their unwavering commitment to her care over the past six years.
