In loving memory of Anita M Shipway, March 27, 1946 – October 12, 2024, aged 78, of Endicott, NY passed away peacefully on October 12, 2024 at Mercy House surrounded by her family after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was a beloved sister, wife, mother, grandmother, most recently a great-grandmother, and friend who was known for her kindness, strength and unwavering love.
Anita was born March 27, 1946, in Binghamton, NY, the daughter of the late Earl and Mary Anne Kany. She grew up in Endicott, NY with her three siblings and would remain in Broome County her entire life.
Anita is a Johnson City High School graduate and pursued a career in dental assisting from which she retired from in the mid-2000s. She was known for her high energy with a friendly and welcoming demeanor as well as the ability to make even the most anxious patient feel at ease.
On a crisp fall day in November 1965, Anita married Jim Shipway, and together they raised one daughter. They enjoyed 52 years of marriage before his passing in May 2017. She was a devoted wife and mother, who created a home filled with love and warmth, where everyone felt welcome.
She loved to cook, though baking during the holiday season was one of her true passions, making sure everyone’s “favorite cookie” was made. Hobbies she enjoyed were decorating her home, sewing, crocheting, Soduko and staying fit through daily walks and visiting the gym. Another true passion for Anita was her love for John Denver. Before this disease took her ability to speak, she still knew all the words (and would sing along with) “Take me Home Country Roads” and “Rocky Mountain High”!
Anita’s kindness extended beyond her family and work and into her community where she volunteered at Mom’s House, Danielle House, and joining Jim during his Meals on Wheels deliveries. She loved to chat with the visitors of Danielle House, trying to ease their stress related to the reasons for their stay; along with the clients she met along Jim’s Meals on Wheels route. Anita had a way of putting people at ease and making them feel cared for.
Anita is survived by her daughter, Anne (Shipway) Wahl Ochiai; her grandchildren, Zachary and Joshua Wahl; her great granddaughter, Nora; and her siblings, Ellen (Eugene) Burns, Donald (Susan) Kany and Diane (Edward) Miller. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim and her parents, Earl and Mary Anne Kany.
A celebration of life will be held in Anita’s honor at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please contribute to Mercy House of the Southern Tier, 212 North McKinley Avenue, Endicott, NY 13760 in Anita’s name.
