Antonio Lasorte

Dr. Antonio LaSorte, 91, of Binghamton, went to be with his Lord and Savior on September 16, 2014 surrounded by his loving children and grandchildren peacefully at home. He was born the 13th of January 1923. His parents Vitantonio and Rosa LaSorte, and his brother Frank predeceased him. His is survived by his children Tony Jr., Dr. Bradley La Sorte, his wife Antonia and their sons Matthew and Daniel; his other children, Denise, Adrian, Desiree and her daughter Olivia; mother of his children, Margaret; his sister Francesca and her husband Jack Cohen and their children Debbie Hoyt, Diane Cohen, Ted Cohen and Marcia Proto; his brother Dr. Michael La Sorte and his children Frank and Michelle; his sister Rose. After graduating from Union-Endicott High School in 1940, he earned a B.A. from Houghton College. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Rochester in 1948. He was inducted into its Honor Medical Society (Alpha Omega Alpha). Post graduate general surgical training was done at the New York Hospital (Cornell Medical Center) and thoracic surgical training at Triboro Hospital in Queens. Fourteen months were spent as a Captain in the Army Medical Corps during the Korean conflict at a Surgical Field Hospital. He was certified by the American Board of General and Thoracic Surgery. In addition, he was a founding member of the Society of Thoracic Surgery and was inducted into the American College of Surgeons and the College of Chest Physicians. From 1956 to 1990, he practiced Thoracic Surgery in the Triple Cities being on the staff of all its hospitals. In time, he was President of the Broome County Medical Society and the Binghamton Academy of Medicine. There was active involvement with the New York Medical Society and the American Medical Association. He became a Certified Parliamentarian and was Vice Speaker for the NYS Medical Society. Having been associated with the Catskill Fly Fishing Center since 1980, he became its President from 1990-1996. Under his watch, the unique Fly Fishing Museum was built. In his retirement years, it was his good fortune to fish for trout and salmon. Russia, England, Canada, British Columbia, Labrador, New Zealand, Mexico, and the Florida Keys were his destinations. He has asked his children to remember him in a special way. Every year, 13 red roses are to be released into the waters of Coles Pool on the West Branch of the Delaware River. This will be in late April or early May. This will be the time of the emergence of a mayfly known as the Hendricksons. This will release his spirit to fish these hallowed waters again. We will see him on the opposite shore through the mist of an early morning or in the evening as dusk approaches. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday 9:30 am from St. Patrick’s Church, corner Leroy and Oak Streets, Binghamton. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott Friday from 4-7 pm. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to St. Patrick’s Church, 9 Leroy Street, Binghamton, NY 13905.
