Beverly J. Smith, 81, our beloved mother, sister and friend went home to her Lord and Savior Thursday, February 5, 2015 at Lourdes Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald, on January 25, 2014, her parents Joseph (1983) and Rose (1994) Beland, her sister Lena Vandermark and her brother Richard Vandermark. She is survived by her children, Les (Ann) Smith, Marilynn (Thomas) Tierney, Chris (Ileana) Smith, Theresa (William) Spangenburg, and Diana Smith; eight grandchildren, James (Kate), David, Kevin, Micah Smith, Ryan (Erika), Kyle (Erin), and Caitlin Tierney, and Tyler Smith; and three great grandchildren, Lukas, Grayden, and Chase Tierney. She is also survived by her brothers Howard (Joan) Vandermark, Leon (Mary) Vandermark and her sister Charlotte (Edward) Kent, sisters-in-law Marcia Newhart, Darlynn (Dan) Horner and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Beverly married Donald on September 8, 1951 at Our Lady of Sorrows, Vestal, NY. She and Donald were separated a week later by his Army deployment to France, until August 1952, when he was honorably discharged from service. During their time apart, she worked as a sales clerk at Metzgar’s on Washington Avenue in Endicott, NY. Their first child was born the following year, and she became a stay at home mother, raising her 5 children. She enjoyed having family cookouts in the backyard, socializing with her next door neighbors, doing crossword puzzles, playing cards, laughing at a good joke and watching western movies at night and soap operas in the afternoon. While residing at Willow Point Nursing Home for the last few years, she enjoyed playing BINGO, winning frequently, and attending weekly Catholic masses. When she became unable to leave the nursing home, Beverly’s room was decorated for every major holiday, and we celebrated the holidays with her. Our monthly “movie” nights together brought her so much pleasure. The family would like to thank the staff at Willow Point North 1, and the ICU and 1 Ross staff at Lourdes Hospital. She was a loving mother, sister and friend and will be greatly missed by all of those who loved her dearly.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday 10 am from Most Holy Rosary Church 36 Main Street, Maine. Burial will be in Maine Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home 511-513 East Main Street Endicott Sunday from 2-5 pm. In lieu of flowers please send donations to a Charity of one’s choice.
