Clarence A. Engel

Mr. Clarence Engel, 77, of 109 Birdsall Street, Endicott, NY, passed away Sunday, December 9, 2012, at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, due to heart failure. He was born in Scranton, PA, on July 11, 1935, the son of Clarence and Thelma (Davis) Engel. He graduated from Scranton University with a degree in accounting while raising a family, and served with the U.S. Navy from 1953 to 1955 as a communications specialist. He was married to Lois Toman in 1955 and they enjoyed 57 lovely years of marriage, mostly in their home in Endicott. Mr. Engel was employed with the Lackawanna Railroad in the areas of finance and operations, and later as a business analyst for IBM for the better of 27 years until his retirement in 1992. He was a past member of the Masons, President of the West Corners Lions Club and a current member of the Endicott Elks Club. He earned several awards for his unselfish service to the community, most importantly with his leadership of the West Corners Charitable Foundation (including the Ray Tiberi golf fundraiser) supporting Lourdes Hospice and the American Cancer Society. For the past 14 years, Clarence has spent the summers at his cottage on Owasco Lake, enjoying the water, wildlife and good friends from “Indian Cove”.Clarence is survived by his wonderful wife Lois; his beloved daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Kevin Sterzin, of Fairport, NY; his dear sister, Lois Hein, of Scranton, PA.; his cherished grandchildren, Kris Sterzin and Kyle Sterzin; and several nephews and cousins, as well as many wonderful longtime friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Clarence and Thelma.His funeral will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, 29 Grant Avenue in Endicott, with Co-Pastors Jan and Tim Devine celebrating Clarence’s life. Calling hours will be Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Allen Memorial Home, 511 East Main Street in Endicott. The Endicott Elks will hold their Lodge of Sorrows service at 8:45 pm, Friday.In lieu of flowers, contributions in Clarence’s memory may be made to the Endicott Elks Lodge #1977, 619 North Nanticoke Ave, Endicott, NY, endicottelks1977@stny.rr.com, (607) 754-0335, or to the West Corners Lioness organization, Shirley Morgus, president, 72 Hardy Rd, Johnson City, NY 13790.
