Daniel Reed

Daniel Richard Reed, of Vestal, NY, aged 96 years, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2023. Dad was predeceased by his wife, Ann Reed. He is survived by his children Daniel P. Reed (Arlington, VA) and Diana Arras (George, Toronto, ON) and his grandchildren Michelle Arras (Los Angeles, CA), David Arras (Vancouver, BC), and James Arras (Toronto, ON). Dad was born in 1926 in Grand Rapids, MI. His family moved to Ilion, NY when he was a child. Soon after his high school graduation he enlisted in the Army Air Force and was sent to the European Theatre to serve as a radio operator in Bucharest, Romania and at the Tullin Air Force Base in Austria. It was a big change for a young man from a small town. He met Ann in a chance encounter while he was exploring Bucharest and she returned with him to the states, as his bride, in 1947. Dad had a successful and rewarding career as a manager in the electronic and mechanical equipment industry. He started with the Link Group, moving eventually to Stow Manufacturing, and was president of their Components Assembly Division. His work with Link took him to Palo Alto, CA for two years to manage Link’s Laboratory there, before returning to the Binghamton area. Dad was considered an Adirondack “original” having grown up so close in the Mohawk Valley. He spent many days both for work and recreation in the Adirondack Park. Dad was a hunter and experienced outdoorsman, and a long-time member of the Adirondack Mountain Club. In his later years he came to appreciate wildlife and conservation more generally. He was an avid member of the Sierra Club and led many week-long trips in his home range, the Adirondacks, and in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains. In retirement, Dad traveled with Mom and was a volunteer at Voices for Children. In more recent years, Dad became an avid reader and was very happy to be living in his “castle”, the family home. He enjoyed many family visits from his children and grandchildren. He had a positive outlook on life and when the move to the Oxford, NY VA home came about recently, he responded to his new environment with appreciation and optimism.
