Dominick Malarkey

Dominick Malarkey, 97 of Endicott, passed away peceacefully surrounded by his devoted family, Sunday, June 15, 2014. He is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Betty; his daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Daniel Gordon; daughter in law, Donna Malarkey; grandchildren Amy DellaPenta (Ron), Brad Gordon (Cyndy) and Craig Gordon (Laura); and five great-grandchildren, Keith DellaPenta, Olivia and Violet Gordon, and Annabelle and Jamison Gordon. He is predeceased by his son, Jim. Dominick was the last surviving son of a family of twelve brothers and sisters. Predeceased are: Tony (Shirley) Malarkey, Pete (Marion) DeNovellis, Leo (Delores) DeNovellis, Paul (Mary) DeNovellis, Caroline (Marty) Martone, Marion (Joe) Gioia, Patricia (Sam) DiBello, Antoinette DeNovellis, Mike Malarkey; Luke Malarkey; Louis DeNovellis and Josephine (Angelo) Bernardo. He is survived by three sisters-in-law: Mary Malarkey, Jean Malarkey and Norma DeNovellis. Dominick was one of the many people in Endicott who worked at Endicott-Johnson Shoes, where he had a job as an edge-setter. While he was at E-J, he started a garbage-collecting business on the side — Malarkey’s Sanitary Refuse — with one truck that covered routes on the north side of Endicott and in Maine. Later, he went to work for the Town of Union, where he did snowplowing and highway work. For many years, he and Betty spent winters in Florida, where he loved to walk the beach and enjoy the sunshine. He was proud of his Italian heritage and was president of the Alberobello Club in Endicott for more than 25 years. Anyone who attended the club’s summer picnics at Highland Park knows Dominick knew just the right recipe for spiedies. A fan of the New York Yankees, he ran buses down to the games in the Bronx for many years to see the Yankee greats old and new. He told stories of Babe Ruth once visiting the Triple Cities, and of George F. Johnson himself once buying his family a cow so the kids could have milk. In later years, his great-grandchildren delighted him, whether it was tractor rides for Annabelle, Jamison and Keith, or laughing along with Olivia and Violet. He will be missed, by his family and his many, many friends alike. The family thanks Dr. Alan Miller and his staff, and UHS at Ideal Home Care for the loving care of Dominick.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday 9:30 am from the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Joseph’s Church, Endicott at 10 am. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home Wednesday from 4-7 pm.
