Donald Leo McManus, 79 of Endicott, passed away on Tuesday November 20, 2012 at Lourdes Hospital, surrounded by his family after a valiant battle with Leukemia. Don is predeceased by his parents Edwin and Doris McManus, his in-laws Thomas and Antoinette Gleeson, brothers Matthew McManus, Joseph McManus and Jerome McManus, sister Sharon Mang, brothers-in-laws Michael Fiorelli and William Kostun. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Kathleen Gleeson McManus; daughters Kim (Jim) Crandall, Kathleen (Ron) Nowak: sons Donald (Gina) McManus, Kevin (Rebecca) McManus, Matthew (Jennifer) McManus, Edwin (Jennifer) McManus. Don is survived by 14 Grandchildren: Ryan (Taylor) Crandall, Allison McManus, Donald (DJ) McManus, Amy Crandall, Ashley Crandall, Amber McManus, Stephanie Pruden, Eric Pruden, Elyssa McManus, Edwin McManus, Kevin Jr. McManus, Jacob McManus, Aileen McManus and Taylor McManus; four Great Grandchildren: Anthony McManus, Hayden Strope, Alana McManus, and Harlow Crandall. Donald is survived by brothers William McManus, David (Patricia) McManus, Mike (Terri) McManus, James (Linda) McManus; sisters Marcella Fiorelli, Joanne (Richard) Nolan, Helen Kostun, Kathleen (Charles) Porter and brother-in-law Robert Mang. Don was a kind and compassionate man who had a devout love for God, church, family and his country. Don was a member of St Anthony of Padua Church in Endicott, serving as a Parish Trustee and in the funeral ministry. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He was the owner and proprietor of McManus Press in Endicott N.Y. As a dedicated public servant, he was a Town of Union Councilman, Supervisor and elected Broome County’s first Democratic County Executive. His commitment to public service elevated him to the state level as a Regional Ombudsman, Director of Regulatory Affairs of the Department of State before serving as active Secretary of State under former Gov. Hugh Carey. He retired as the Deputy Director of the NYS Thruway Authority under former Gov Mario Cuomo. Funeral Services will be held Monday 9:15 am from the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Anthony of Padua Church at 10 am. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The Family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home Sunday from 2-6 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Anthony’s of Padua Church’s “Elevator Fund”. The family would like to thank the Lourdes Oncology, Infusion and ICU teams. The family would also like to encourage friends to support blood donations to fight Leukemia.
