Donna Mary Smith, 83, of Endicott, NY, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on February 3, 2022 after a brief battle with cancer. Donna was predeceased by her loving husband, James W. Smith, son, Jeffery J. Smith, her parents, Firmin and Margaret Erding, brother, Charles Erding, and brother-in-law, John Wolfe.
Donna is survived by her sister, Dianne Wolfe of Waukon, IA and sister and brother-in-law, Kay and James Barry of North Hills, CA. She is survived by her children, Stanley (Kathy) Smith, Warwick, NY, Joseph (Angela) Smith, Rossville, GA, Scott (Carol) Smith, Wolfeboro, NH and Ellen (William) Snapp, Newark Valley, NY. Donna is also survived by her grandchildren that she loved very much. Lindsey Smith, Springfield, MO, James (Laura) Smith, Chattanooga, TN, Sarah (Thomas) Anderson, Wolfeboro, NH, Amelia (Jacob) Chesnut, Pelham, AL and Jacob (Alyssa) Snapp, Newark Valley, NY. She also is survived by 3 dear great grandchildren, Collin, Leah, and Ava and her very special niece and god-daughter, Nancy (Ted) Daily, Cedar Rapids, IA as well as many nieces and nephews.
Donna graduated from Waukon High School in Waukon, IA and then moved to Rochester, MN. She worked as a medical secretary for St. Mary’s Hospital. She then met the love of her life and together they raised 5 children. They moved to Warwick, NY then retired in Endwell, NY. She and her husband enjoyed retirement by traveling to see family. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, time with special friends and crocheting. She was very active in her church. Donna also volunteered at the Mother Teresa’s Food Pantry for years in Endicott, NY. Donna’s quiet strong faith, kindness, selflessness and generosity was a gift to everyone who knew her. Also for the people who really knew her they will miss her brief wise words and dry wit.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday 11 am at Church of the Holy Family, 3600 Phyllis Street, Endwell. Entombment will be in Riverhurst Cemetery, Endicott. The family will receive friends at church Tuesday from 10 am until Mass time at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier and designate that the funds go to Mother Teresa’s Food Pantry in Endicott, NY. Donations may be mailed to 388 Upper Oakwood Avenue, Elmira, NY 14903 or made on the website www.foodbankst.org.
