Dorothy was born in Bluffton Ohio on November 22, 1937, to the late Donald and Helen (Winterhalter) Stratton. She graduated from Bluffton High School in 1955 and was the class valedictorian. She grabbed her baton and marched to Bowling Green State University, participating in the marching band as a majorette, singing and dancing her way to a Bachelor of Science in Business Education. She was a proud sister in the Phi Mu sorority, a member of the Kappa Delta Pi and Pi Omega Pi Honor Societies and served as President from 1958-1959. She was the recipient of the Quill Type Award for Outstanding Senior in Business Education. Dorothy went on to teach high school business education in Souderton, PA and was on her way to get her master’s degree at Columbia University when Stan persuaded her to marry him instead. They married in 1961 and she helped him get through medical school and supported his medical career moving to San Francisco, CA, Norfolk VA, and Gallup NM before landing in Endwell NY in 1971 with their 5 children. When living in Gallup she took a part time job in the Medical Records Department at the Gallup Indian Medical Center, inspiring her to later continue her education. Dorothy returned to school and graduated from Temple University in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science in Health Record Administration. At Temple she was the recipient of the Academic Achievement Award from the College of Allied Health Professions graduating Summa Cum Laude, and of course she had a 4.0 average and was a President’s Scholar. She worked at the Binghamton Psychiatric Center for 22 years as the Medical Records Administrator. Dorothy was active in her professional organization the New York Health Information Management Association (NYHIMA) and was the recipient of the 1995 NYHIMA Clinical Preceptor Award. She was recognized for her quality improvement work and was the recipient of the “Tops on the Hill,” an employee award. After retiring in 2000, Dorothy continued as a special project consultant for BPC.
Dorothy was a loving dedicated mother and enjoyed cheering on her children and grandchildren at their events. She was an excellent cook and had the family over for dinner every Sunday night. She enjoyed traveling with Stan and every year they visited different countries throughout the world. She enjoyed music and singing, participating in various marching bands and choirs throughout the years. She was a liberal woman and remained politically active, attending rallies with her granddaughter Alana who shared a strong dedication to the rights of women. She liked to golf, play Bridge, and spend time with friends and family. She inspired many, was loved by all and will be dearly missed.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 10, 2025, at 1 PM with a service to follow at 2 PM at the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 E. Main St., Endicott, and a lunch to follow at Traditions.
