Dorothy Roberts Harper of Endwell, NY, passed away Friday, March 21, 2014. She was pre-deceased by husband, James M. Harper in 1988, sisters, Helen and husband, Donald Logan, Gertrude (Trudy) and Anna Roberts, sisters-in-laws Louise, Grace and Betty. Formerly of Plains, Pennsylvania, her life was enriched by brother–in–law and wife, Harry and Rita Harper, many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great, great-nieces and nephews. Dorothy, born in Plains, Pennsylvania,N ovember 6, 1921, came to Endicott in 1946 to be with her husband, Jim who worked for IBM. She lived for years on Adams Avenueand then moved to Yale Street, Endwell in 1978. Dorothy worked in Tri-Phi Women’s Shop, McLain’s Department Store and Esther Immerman’s on Washington Avenueretiring to be a full-time caregiver for her mother-in-law. She was known for dressing smartly with great attention to color and detail. Dear and caring neighbors, Meberts, Franklins and Spellmans and many others added to her “family”. They were always there to share friendship and respond to her needs. She loved them dearly and treasured their hugs, returning them with warmth. She was a good listener and friend to many, including volunteering for the church prayer chain and the Interfaith Caregiver Program. She was active in the Plains Presbyterian Church in Plains, Pennsylvania and West Presbyterian Church in Binghamton (now United Presbyterian Church, Binghamton).
Memorial Services will be held Friday 1 pm at the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott, with Reverend Arthur Suggs, a longtime friend officiating. At the family’s request there will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Dorothy’s memory may be made to Children’s Home, 1182 Chenango Street, Binghamton, NY 13901 or Faith in Action, 3 Otseningo Street, Binghamton, NY. 13903. Dorothy was active with both of these organizations.
