Dorothy “Dottie” Takas

Dorothy (Dottie) Bensman Takas of Johnson City, NY, died peacefully at age 96 at Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton, NY, on October 20, 2017. Dottie was born on September 4, 1921 in Dayton, Ohio, the daughter of Louis and Clara Bensman, and sister to Ruth, MaryLou, and Louis, all of whom predeceased her. She was married for 51 years to Ernest Takas, who died in 1997. A long-time resident of Endicott, NY, Dottie spent the last 10 years of her life at the Hilltop campus of United Methodist Homes in Johnson City. She was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Endicott, and a long-time volunteer there and at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton. Dottie enjoyed sports, particularly golf and bowling, and she was a gifted artist and craftsperson. She especially enjoyed time spent with her family and friends. Dottie is survived by her son, Tom, and daughter-in-law, Denise; daughter, Patricia, and son-in-law, John; six grandchildren, Randy (Sue), Ty (Chelena), Brittney (Eric), Melissa, Kristen (Victor), and John, Jr.; and three great-grandchildren, Kaidence, Vance and Adey. Special thanks to the staff at Hilltop for the care shown Dottie during her final years.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday 9:30 am from the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Ambrose Church at 10 am. Burial will be in Riverhurst Cemetery, Endicott. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home Tuesday morning from 8:30 to 9:30 am. Memorial donations may be made to Lourdes Foundation or a charity of your choice.
