Reverend Douglas N. Akers died at home after a brief illness. He was born to Rev. George R. and Margaret Akers in Scranton, PA on September 20, 1937. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his two daughters, Susan and Linda Akers, his sister Judith Morgan, sister-in-law Dorla J. Akers and step-grandson, Joey Tinney. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Marilyn Avery Akers, son David B. Akers, Oklahoma City, OK, brother George R. Akers, Jr. Owego, NY, sister Ruth Wiseman, Basingstoke, England, step grand-daughter Ashley Cook and numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces & nephews. He attended Duke University and Lycoming College receiving his B.S degree in 1960 and his M.Div. from Wesley Theological Seminary in 1963. He was ordained elder in the former Wyoming Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1963. Doug served churches in the Wanamie/Alden/Stairville Charge; Hawley/Paupack/White Mills Charge; Dallas, PA; Oneonta District Superintendent; Sarah Jane Memorial UM Church, Johnson City, NY; and First UM Church, Endicott. Following retirement he was active in the Whittemore Hill UM Church. He served on many boards and committees in the former Wyoming Conference. He loved singing, gardening and had a special relationship with his horse, Chili, for 16 years. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 53 McKinley Ave, Endicott, with calling hours from 1 to 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Butterfly Connection Fund, United Methodist Frontier Foundation, 20 Soundview Ave, White Plains, NY 10606 or The Whittemore Hill United Methodist Church Mission Fund, % Lynn Warner, 224 Powell Rd, Owego, NY 13827
