Edward “Ed” Schappert

Edward L. Schappert, 97, of Johnson City, NY passed away at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital on January 15, 2024. Ed was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA, graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Wilkes-Barre, served in the US Navy during World War II and then attended Kings College after the war. Edward is predeceased by his parents, Emil Schappert and Katherine Lyons Schappert; his loving wife, Kathleen McCarthy Schappert; and his four brothers, Emil, Leo, Donald, Raymond Schappert.

Edward is survived by his sister Theresa Murphy, four children, Ann Schappert Scalzo (Michael), Edward A. Schappert (Patricia), John Schappert (Angela), Mary Catherine Schappert Dykeman (Bob); along with10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Edward was a member of the Church of the Holy Family in Endwell and a member of the Endicott Rotary and West Endicott Elks Club. Ed’s favorite pastimes were watching and playing golf, taking in a Yankee game and most especially singing, his strong clear tenor a source of enjoyment for people around the community and around the world. Ed also enjoyed entertaining and loved sharing a Manhattan or two with friends and family. Ed’s role with the Elks Club was an additional source of pride in his life as a past Exulted Ruler. He also enjoyed keeping up with the activities of his many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass for Edward will be held on Thursday, January 25 at 11 am at Church of the Holy Family, 3600 Phyllis Street, Endwell. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends on Thursday at Church from 10 am until Mass time at 11 am.
