Edwin “Ed” Dougherty Jr.

Edwin D Dougherty Jr, 100, returned to God on December 11, 2023 at Brookdale at Castle Gardens in Vestal, NY. He was born on August 12, 1923 in Camden, NJ to Edwin and Hilda Dougherty. Ed grew up in Camden, where he graduated from Camden Catholic High School in 1941. After high school, he enter the Army Air Corps and served in the Pacific during WWII. After the war, Ed attended Villanova University, where he graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering. Ed married Helen Weaver in 1950 in McSherrystown, PA. That same year, Ed began his long career with IBM. Ed and Helen were happily married for 63 years. They retired to Lake Pine, NJ in 1987, where they lived until they returned to Johnson City in 2002. They moved to Castle Gardens in 2010. Ed was devoted to the Blessed Mother, and led his fellow residents in the weekly rosary for many years. Ed never attended an event where he didn’t have lottery scratch-offs to hand out to all the attendees. Ed was a life member of the St. Mary of the Lakes Council Knights of Columbus, a life member of VFW 1449, and a member of American Legion Unit 1700. Ed is survived by his children: Dan (Gail) of Portland, OR; Michael of Syracuse, NY; Pat (John) Van Wezenbeeck of Endicott, NY; Tim (Pam) of Endicott, NY; and Cathy (Mark) Shore of Salem, NH; 14 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. Ed was preceded in death by his beloved wife Helen, his parents, Hilda and Edwin Dougherty Sr, and his brothers John and George.
The family will receive friends at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Vestal on Friday, 12/15 from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30, also at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery Johnson City. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the food pantry at Our Lady of Sorrows.
