Ernest (Ernie) Koehler of Endwell New York, age 94, passed away at his new home in TN on September 17, 2021. Ernie is predeceased by his wife Evelyn; son John; parents George and Meta; sisters Harriet, Eleanora, Eugenia, and Dorothy; nephew James.
Ernie is survived by his son Edwin and Diane Koehler; grandchildren Samantha Koehler, Holly Koehler, Lindsey Koehler, and Jacob Koehler; cousin Arlene Lundquest; nephew Mark Horan; nieces Harriet (Hatsy) Horan, Susan Enders, and Martha King; several great-nieces and great nephews.
Ernie was born and raised in Elmira New York. He served in the Army during and post WWII, upon returning he continued his education and received his Bachelors from Bowling Green State University in Ohio and later his Master’s in Education from SUNY Cortland.
Ernie served his community for 32 years starting as a teacher at George H. Nichols Elementary and ending as the Principal of George W. Johnson Elementary when he retired in 1985. He was Honored in 2008 when the lobby of George F. Johnson Elementary School was names after him. He further served his community for over 60 years as a member of the Lions Club; as President of the Boys & Girls Club of America in Endicott; a volunteer at Wilson Hospital.
Ernie became a beloved figure for his friendliness, kindness and Great Spirit of cooperation which he both fostered within and outside the school community. Ernie was very generous and gave to over 25 charities including the American Alzheimer’s Association and Berea College. Ernie enjoyed fishing, cooking, hiking, golf and spending quality time with family and friends.
Ernie lived a full and exciting life, touched many lives, and will be deeply missed.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday 10:30 am from the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott. Burial will be in Riverhurst Cemetery, Endicott. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home, Saturday from 9:30 am until service time at 10:30 am.
