Ernestine Marshall

d. June 18, 2014

Ernestine Jeanette Marshall, 75, of Endwell, New York passed on June 18, 2014 after battling a long illness with Parkinson’s disease. She was born in Aliquippa, PA on November 20, 1938. Ernestine was predeceased by her parents, Leona (Herring) and Ernest Savage, and brother, James (Sonny) Herring. She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Larry Marshall; son, Jason Marshall; sister, Maxine Glenn (Leroy Glenn, deceased); and many loving nieces and nephews. She attended Slippery Rock University and Temple University, both in Pennsylvania, where she received degrees in Health and Physical Education and Biology. She also took extensive courses at Ithaca College. Her first teaching assignment was at Joseph John Junior High School in Johnstown, PA. Most of her career was spent teaching physical education, department athletic director, and coaching volleyball and cheerleading in the Union Endicott Central School District from 1968 to 1999 when she retired. Ernestine (Ernie, Teenie), as she was called, loved teaching, coaching, watching golf on television, helping out in her church, and working in her sorority. She also loved playing bridge with her bridge buddies and was a fierce competitor in that sport. She was a longtime member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (Upsilon Nu Omega Chapter) where she was close to celebrating 25 years, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (an international women’s organization dedicated to excellence in education), New York State Teachers Association, New York State Coaches Association, and Trinity AME Zion Church. Her family, friends, and colleagues, will always remember her big personality, very spirited forms of expression, and her loving and caring ways of assisting others in their time of need. The family sends their heartfelt thanks to her healthcare providers, nursing staff and doctors at Susquehanna Nursing Home, church friends, neighbors, colleagues, friends, and sorority members for helping to make this inevitable journey so much easier for Ernestine.
