On Tuesday, May 7th, Jack went to be with his Lord at the ripe old age of 94, with family at his side. He was predeceased by his parents, Merton and Florence Pitkin, and his loving wife of 72 years, Jackie Pickering Pitkin. He is survived by his three children, Cindy (Bill) Starring, Suzanne (Steve) Gorney, and Robb Pitkin, his six grandchildren, Jason and Nikki Smith, Billy, Paige, and Brad (Melanie) Starring, and Ross Pitkin, his four great grandchildren, Zachary Smith, Rowan Clark, and Dakota and Dylan Becker Starring, his favorite dog, Shiloh, and Clarence, his faithful horse from Montana.
Jack Pitkin was one of a kind. With his broad shoulders, his deep booming voice, and his great sense of humor, you always knew when Jack was in the room. Jack was a committed family man. He met his sweetheart, Jackie, in 1947, and loved spending time with his family at their cottage on Cayuga Lake. Jack also loved cruising in the family boat, the Jac-Wi-Lon II, snowmobiling, and moving bricks and stone.
Jack was employed at IBM for 36 years, retiring in 1987 as a development engineering manager. During his years at IBM, he served in several management positions in Endicott and Owego. Jack was also a committed and faithful public servant, and over many years was involved with the Boy Scouts of America, the Samaritan Counseling Center, Springbrook Special Needs School, American Baptist Ministries at all levels, Broome County Counsel of Churches, SOS Shelter, and Good Shepard Fairview Foundation, to name a few. But first and foremost, Jack loved serving his Lord Jesus Christ at the First Baptist Church of Endicott, where he acted as Moderator, Deacon, Clerk, Treasurer, and more for over 65 years.
Jack was often a force of nature, but was also tender-hearted and kind. We will greatly miss his faithfulness, his wisdom, his steadfast support, and his silly sense of humor.
Special thanks to the staff at Lourdes hospital, his mail carrier, Michelle, and his special friend and caregiver, Carol Dixon.
Funeral Services will be held 12 pm Tuesday, May 14 at First Baptist Church, 1406 Monroe Street, Endicott. Burial will be in Riverhurst Cemetery, Endicott. The family will receive friends at church Tuesday May 14 from 10:30 am until service time at 12 pm.
