Joan Behil

d. May 24, 2024

Joan Marie Behil passed away peacefully on Friday, May 24, 2024 at the age of 93.
She was predeceased by her parents, James and Anna (Cupina) Poodiack and her husband, John F. Behil. Joan is survived by her children Kathy Behil, John (Gina) Behil, Steve (Robin) Behil, and Joe (Judee) Behil, her grandson Joe Behil, her brother Jack (Lori) Poodiack, several nieces and nephews, and her sweet dog, Harry.
Joan graduated with her RN from the Wilson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and worked in the nursing field throughout her career including at the Endicott Nursing Home in Endicott, Family and Children’s Society in Binghamton, and various Medicine Shoppes in Broome County.
Joan’s family was her world. She was an exceptional mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law. She was an outstanding cook and baker, she loved to garden, and she had a gift for growing orchids in her front window. She crocheted afghans regularly, including one for any baby born to a family member or friend. Her signature crochet item was the “scrubbie”, made from strips of netting material crocheted into four-inch circles and used to scrub your Teflon pans without scratching them. These were highly coveted by all family members so she always made enough to hand out to everyone at the annual Poodiack Christmas party.
A deeply spiritual person, it was Babka’s nature to love and to generously give of herself, to demonstrate God’s love for all humanity through her words and actions. We will miss her tremendously, but we take comfort in knowing that she is home.
A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, May 31st at 10 am at St. Joseph’s Church, 207 Hayes Avenue, Endicott. Burial will be in Slovak Catholic Cemetery, Binghamton. The family will receive friends Friday at church from 9 am until Mass time at 10 am.
We wish to extend our deepest thanks to the wonderful staff at Willow Point Nursing Home who cared for Mom so tenderly over the past few weeks.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mercy House of the southern Tier, 212 North McKinley Avenue, Endicott, NY, 13760.
