John “Jack” Cheevers

John E “Jack” Cheevers, 79, of Endicott passed away peacefully on March 30, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. He was born October 4, 1935 in Endicott. He is predeceased by his parents, Edward C and Monica D Cheevers and his wife, Nadeen (Evans) Cheevers. He is survived by his three children, John E Cheevers Jr. of Ceres, CA, Susanne M Cheevers of Binghamton and Elizabeth Cheevers-Youngs (Ty) of Wappingers Falls; their mother, Geraldine Cheevers of Owego; his grandchildren, Sydney and Taylor Youngs; his loving fiancé and best friend, Dianne Lindeborn of Castle Creek and their beloved cat, Yancey; three step children, Doug (Sharon) Evans of Jasper, GA, Craig Evans and partner, Dwight Myers of Groton and Jan Evans of Geneva; his sisters, Mary Faith Hunsinger of Binghamton, Cathy (Tom) Ondreyko of Saratoga Springs; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephew who were all a big part of his life. A lifelong resident of the Town of Union, he graduated from Union Endicott in 1953. After serving three years in the US Navy, he graduated from Clarkson University in 1960 where he was president of his fraternity Alpha Chi Rho. After working for seven years as a broker in the financial industry he founded the investment firm Cheevers, Hand and Angeline in 1974. Until his passing he served as the Chief Executive Officer of the firm. Jack was very active in community service. He was a former member of the Endwell Fire Dept. Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis and Elks Clubs and American Legion. Most recently he was active in the Veterans for Peace Organization. He has been a strong supporter of the Boys and Girls Club of Endicott. Jack always supported the local performing arts in the Southern Tier and even served as a board member of the Cider Mill Playhouse in Endicott. He was often seen at the Forum, The Anderson Center and the Chenango Playhouse. He was an avid sports fan, of both collegiate and professional teams. He was a season ticket hold for Syracuse University sports and Binghamton Senators Hockey. He has traveled extensively for many major sporting events. A dedicated Democrat whose political career began with a 1972 run for New York State Senate against Warren Anderson. Although he lost, his strong showing established him as an up and coming political force. He served 5 terms as Town of Union Supervisor between 1976 and 2004. In the early 1980’s he was Chairman of the Broome County Democratic Committee. Jack was known for his winning smile, generous nature and his ability to make and keep friends. He was loyal to and earned the respect of his employees, business associates, clients and many friends. He was a devoted family man and found much joy in his grandchildren. He made everyone feel welcome. His “recycled” jokes were infamous. He had great love and compassion for all animals and supported various animal related charities. He will be greatly missed by all those who were blessed to have had him in their lives. The family will receive friends from 4-7 pm at Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main St, Endicott, NY 13760 on Monday April 6th, and a Funeral Mass will be on Tuesday April 7th at The Church of the Holy Family, 3600 Phyllis Street, Endwell, NY 13760 at 11 am with internment to follow at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made to Boys and Girls Club of Western Broome County or the BC Humane Society.
