Dr. John C. Maerz, Jr., 62, of Vestal, passed away at his home Saturday, November 24, 2012. John was born on December 16, 1949 in Philadelphia, PA. He is predeceased by his parents, Mildred (Midge) and Dr. John C. Maerz, Sr.; and his favorite brother-in-law, Bob Marchese. He is survived by his wife, Debbie; stepmother, Barbara; siblings, Sandi, Mark (Norma), Drew (Cindy), Pam (Kelly), Kevin (Shannon) and Kim; children, John, Jennifer, Jacqui, James and Margeaux; grandsons, Jack, Robert, Garrett, their mother Lori; and granddaughter, Isabella; as well as many nieces and nephews. After serving as a corpsman in the U.S. Army, he graduated from the University of Maryland. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson Medical University in Philadelphia in 1979 and joined his first pediatric practice in Utica in 1982. In 1989 he moved to Binghamton to join a group practice. His private practice, Footprints Pediatrics, in Johnson City began in 2001, and would not have been successful without the love, support and patience of his caring and dedicated staff. His 30-year practice of pediatric medicine touched the lives of countless children and their parents. Stories about John emphasize his legendary kindness, tireless dedication to helping kids, and his UNIQUELY wonderful sense of humor. John was very proud of his children and grandchildren. Named “Paw Paw” by his oldest grandson Jack, he spent many hours watching movies with Jack, Robert, Garrett and Isabella. He also had fun with the family’s pets, taking particular pride in his dog Winnie and all of his turtles. With his friendly smile, glasses, and a white beard, John had difficulty convincing children that he was not Santa Clause. All of us who knew John feel very grateful for his kindness, his love of kids, animals, and his amazing sense of humor. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott Friday from 3-6 pm, (those familiar with his time management skills are invited to be a few minutes late). Private Services will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy in John’s memory may be made to Upstate Medical University Foundation, Medical Student Fund, 750 East Adams Street, CAB Room 326, Syracuse, NY 13210.
