John Tylko

d. December 25, 2022

John Tylko fell asleep in the Lord on Sunday evening, December 25, 2022, at Lourdes Hospital. He was 96 years old.

He was predeceased by his wife of nearly fifty years, Elizabeth Tylko, his parents, Anna and Nicholas Tylko, and his sisters, Julia Palso and Olga Tylko. John’s parents immigrated to the US from Ukraine and he was proud of his Ukrainian heritage and culture.

He is survived by his son, John Tylko, his daughter and son-in-law, Carole Ann and Savron Hudson, four grandchildren, Julianne, John, William and Michael, and two great grandchildren, Caroline and Xavier. John was exceptionally proud of his family and their accomplishments.

He graduated from Johnson City High School in 1944. A member of the “greatest generation,” John served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II, training in aerial reconnaissance photography to support the planned Japanese invasion. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institutein 1951 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. John was an accomplished professional engineer who designed highways, bridges and buildings across upstate New York. He served as the Town Engineer of the Town of Union. John had the rare ability to design and build almost anything he set out to create.

John was most proud of his role as the architect of St. John Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Johnson City. He was a lifelong, dedicated member of the church which was founded in the year of his birth. John was an avid investor who helped establish the church’s endowment fund. He had an incredible memory and reveled in telling remarkably detailed stories about his life and his family.

We would like to express our deepest appreciation to his cardiologist, Dr. Justina Wu in Boston, and his dear friends who compassionately cared for John for over a decade.

We will receive friends at St. John Ukrainian Orthodox Church at One St. John Parkway in Johnson City on Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00PM. Father Ivan Synevskyy will offer a Panikhida service at 6:30PM. A Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Friday at 10:00AM followed by burial in the parish cemetery.

Contributions may be made in John’s memory to the St. John Ukrainian Orthodox Church Endowment Fund.
