John Vestal

John Eloy Vestal, 77, of Vestal, N.Y passed away unexpectedly and peacefully on Wednesday, October 27, 2021. He was a most loving husband, father, grandfather (aka PAPA) and friend, who was loved by many and will be missed by all. Born near Yadkinville, N.C. in 1944, John was a true embodiment of southern charm and whit.
In 1973, the Vestals moved to Vestal. John joined the faculty at S.U.N.Y. Binghamton’s Department of Theatre as a Lighting Designer & Theatre Consultant where he taught lighting design and drafting for over 40 years. Throughout his tenure at Binghamton, he dazzled show-goers with his mood-setting lighting design that had the amazing ability to draw the audience right into the scene. John served as Department Chairman for 20 years and designed approximately 244 productions.
John was an integral part of and founding member of the original Cider Mill Playhouse, started in 1976. He not only helped construct the interior of the theatre, but further served as the Resident Lighting Designer & occasional Scenic Designer and Technical Director from 1976-1991. John was a guest artist around the World gaining accomplishment and friends throughout his vast travels.
John was also an avid golfer. He loved watching and playing rounds of golf and would always look for avenues to improve his game. John enjoyed the time he got to spend on golf courses with many friends and family and he would always leave them laughing with his one liners. Those of you lucky enough to be on his email list will surely miss his many jokes.
John is predeceased by his parents, Charles and Ruby Vestal. He is survived by his wife Patricia, his daughter Erin Vestal, his son John (Victoria) Vestal, and his beloved granddaughters Madison, Emersyn and Riley. Papa sure loved them with all his heart.
The family will receive friends and loved ones at Allen Memorial Home; 511-513 E. Main Street, Endicott, NY 13760 on Sunday, October 31st from 2:00-4:00pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Binghamton University Department of Theatre, or a charity of your choice, in his honor.
