Mary Crowell

Mary Julia Toohey Crowell entered into her eternal rest on April 17, 2015 at her home in Vestal. Mary was the second of seven children born to William and Mary (Bertholf) Toohey of Hurleyville, NY. At age 17, she moved to Brooklyn to study nursing at St. Catherine’s, with an affiliation in neurological and psychiatric care at Columbia Presbyterian. She worked as an RN at Nassau Community, Ideal, and Lourdes Hospitals. At Ideal, she performed the role of head nurse of Pediatrics. After retirement, she served as a volunteer with Lourdes Hospice. For several decades, she sang in the senior and bereavement choirs at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Vestal, which she attended for over sixty years. She is predeceased by her parents, her brothers and sisters, her husband Robert, and her daughter Margaret Jane Crowell Codella. She is survived by her son, Dr. John Crowell and daughter-in-law, Mary Jo Thorn, of Binghamton; two special grandchildren, Scott Crowell, of Vestal, and Leslie Crowell, of Troy; beloved nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10 am Tuesday, April 21st, at Our Lady of Sorrows Church on Main Street, Vestal.
