Mary-Eleanor (Geoghegan) Owen, 90, of Apalachin, NY, peacefully went home with the Lord on Christmas Day 2014. She was born at home on September 23, 1924, to Eleanor (Baron) and Lawrence J. Geoghegan in Watertown, Massachusetts. Mary-Eleanor was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Marvin C. Owen, and her son Christopher. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Susan (Osborne) Owen of Vestal, her daughter and son-in-law, Tamara and Christopher Parker of Apalachin, daughter M. Leslie Quinn of Endwell, son Stephen A. Owen of Portland, Maine, and her brother, Dr. Lawrence Geoghegan and family, of Boston, Massachusetts. She devoted much of her life to her beloved grandchildren, Christopher, Emilia, John and Elianna Owen of Apalachin, Peter E. Quinn of Endwell, Joshua M. Owen of Endicott, and Meredith Owen Truedell of Boston. Maryel leaves behind many others who have “adopted” her through the years as a mother, seeking out her comforting presence and wisdom. Mary-Eleanor graduated from Rosary Academy, Boston, Massachusetts, and then turned down her acceptance to Radcliff to attend Katherine Gibbs so her beloved father could take a less stressful job. Maryel proudly served as a Yeoman First Class in the US Navy during W.W. II. Her life took her from working for the American Red Cross in Virginia Beach, to being Executive Secretary to the Dean at Case Western Reserve, to being a free-lance writer for several women’s magazines and writing Hallmark greeting cards. She loved her role as mother/grandmother the best and was everything from a Girl Scout leader to room mother to daily cheerleader at the ice rink. She lived her life well and will be remembered with much love.
Funeral services for Mary-Eleanor will be held on Tuesday 11 am from the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott, with Reverend Louis Pressman officiating. Burial will be in Vestal Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home Tuesday from 10 am until service time at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Maryel’s name to the American Red Cross, Southern Tier Chapter, 620 East Main Street, Endicott, NY 13760 or to Samaritan’s Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607.
