Mary Elizabeth Hemstreet of Vestal, NY (known as Sue to many) passed away at Lourdes Hospital after a long illness on April 14, 2022. This was just 5 days shy of her 75th birthday.
Mary was predeceased by her parents James A. Hemstreet and Mary R. Hemstreet, as well as her brother, James A. Hemstreet II, and a nephew, Kenneth Hemstreet, and her beloved companion Frau Luka.
Mary is survived by her cousin, Walter Robinson, and a nephew, Christopher Hemstreet.
Mary graduated from Vestal Central High School, then went on to graduate from Syracuse University College of Home Economics-School of Nutrition and Food Science. Mary attended the Massachusetts General Hospital Dietetic Internship following which she attended the Northeastern University Graduate School of Pharmacology. Mary was licensed and registered as a dietitian and clinical nutrition consultant for over 50 years. She moved forward to become a published author of nutrition articles for senior focused magazines.
Her most recent past was blessed by the family she chose…..Her friends Mike and Mary Lou Hick, Frank Burden, Penny Moniz, Denise and Valerie Tarbell, Cynthia Westerman, Jolie Mott Smith, Jean Meica, Chery Schreck, and Judy Nelson. Mary’s message to all would be: “No matter what…do not quit.”
Mary made many gifts to charities that were near and dear to her heart. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to Meals on Wheels of Western Broome County, The Salvation Army of Broome County Adult Rehabilitation Center, or the Broome County Humane Society.
Mary desired was to be cremated and interred alongside her parents at Vestal Hills Memorial Park Cemetery, Old Vestal Road, Vestal 10 am Wednesday, May 25th.
