Mary A. Spencer

Mary Amelia Spencer of Endicott, NY died 2013. She was born in1908 in Allegany, NY,daughter of Henry and Frances Geringer Martiny. Mary graduated from Allegany High School June, 1925, President of the Senior Class, and from Buffalo State College in June, 1929, with a degree in Home Economics. Activities in college included Secretary of Alpha Sigma Alpha in her junior year and President of Phi Upsilon Omieron in her senior year. She was a delegate to the national convention of Phi Upsilon Omieron at the University of Iowa and to the national Meeting of the American Home Economics Association. While there Mary was elected President of the Student Association and presided over the National Meeting in Boston the following year. She was chairwoman of the Broome County Home Economics Teachers Association in 1960. She came to Endicott to teach Home Economics at Union Endicott High School in 1929 for 10 years and at Maine Endwell for 17 years. She married Robert J. Spencer in 1935 and had twin daughters, Mary J. Spencer and Ann R. Spencer, now residing in Natick, MA. Mary was an active member of St. Ambrose Church as a Eucharistic Minister and one of Sister Madeline’s Day Helpers. She was Chairwoman of the Cancer Drive for Eastern Endicott and drove for Meals on Wheels both for over 25 years. She is survived by her daughters, Mary and Ann Spencer and numerous nieces and nephews, grand and great grand nieces and nephews locally and throughout the world. Pre-deceased are her sisters, Helen Rehler and Grace Hanley, and seven Martiny brothers: Clemens, Eugene, George, Howard, John, Lawrence, and Paul. Mary will be dearly missed and kept in loving memory by family and friends.A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday 10 am at St. Ambrose Church, 203 Washington Avenue, Endicott. Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home, Monday from 2-4 and evening 7-9 pm.
