Michael W. Matias, 77, of Endicott, NY died Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton. He was predeceased by his parents Antoinette and Michael Matias Sr. He is survived by his beloved wife JoAnn, his son Mike and his daughter-in-law Sooz of Hobe Sound, FL and his son Kurt and two grandsons, Aidan and Brendan of Albany, NY. He is also survived by his loving sister Joyce Hornick, of Windsor, NY and several nieces, nephews, cousins, uncles, and aunts primarily in the Broome County area. Mike went to Johnson City High School and was a graduate of Broome Community College where he played on some of coach Dick Baldwin’s finest basketball teams. After graduation Mike served in the army as a Medical Assistant and then worked for 35 years as Financial Analyst with IBM Endicott. He was very active at IBM Country Club during those years playing and coaching in many basketball, bowling, golf, softball, and volleyball leagues and ultimately won so many trophies that they elected him President of the Country Club. He had a real passion for coaching and became an Assistant and Head Coach Our Lady of Good Counsel’s greatest CYO Basketball Teams. Mike was an avid golfer and member of Enjoie Golf Course, Shepherd Hills, and Apalachin C.C. over the last 40 years where he loved golfing with many lifelong friends. He will be remembered for his long term commitment as a volunteer on the B.C. Open Committee and all the joy he felt from being such a big part of that special event. We all know Mike enjoyed spending time telling stories, talking sports, and reminiscing with close friends at Kelly’s in West Endicott, a place where his spirit and memories will live on .If you knew Mike turn on Frank Sinatra singing “New York/New York”; raise your glass and give a toast in celebration to one of Broome County’s truly unique character’s.
Funeral Services will be held Monday 9:30 am from the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott, followed by a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church at 10 am. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home Sunday from 3-6 pm. Celebration of Mike’s life will be held on Monday 23rd at 1 pm at Kristopher’s, 1224 Campville Road, Endicott, NY 13760. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the CNY Alzheimer Association, 401 Hayes Avenue, Endicott, NY 13760 or to the charity of your choice.
