Myra Thomas, 79 of Candor, died peacefully Tuesday, February 20, surrounded by her husband, children, grandchildren, and her twin sister and family. One of 13 children born to Henry and Iona Harris, Myra was born on June 5, 1938 along with her twin sister, Myrna, in Endicott, NY. She enjoyed a happy childhood in Endwell, raised by her loving mother and ten older siblings. After graduating from Union-Endicott with the class of 1955, Myra met and married Clifford (Gene) Thomas of Candor, NY, where they built a country home large enough to raise their six children. Although originally a “city girl”, Myra embraced life in a small town and soon became instrumental in the culture and calendar of Candor. She and her best friend Althea founded the Fourth of July Kiddie Parade along with the Little Miss and Mister Candor competition, all of which still happen today, nearly 50 years later. She loved her children and grandchildren, and all children everywhere, donating her money and time, knitting countless hats and mittens each year so children unknown to her would be warm and happy on Christmas morning. She loved her holidays, giving and decorating abundantly, and would turn any event into a holiday especially if it involved a sporting event of one of her grandchildren! She was endlessly talented artistically, making crafts, paintings, dolls, and beautiful quilts. She will be missed by her husband Gene, her children, Gene and Kristin Thomas of Morrisville, Greg Thomas, Lisa Thomas, and Chad Thomas, all of Candor, and Chris and Jennifer Thomas of Endicott. She will be missed by the grandchildren she adored, Benjamin, Devyn, Aaron, William, Simon, Ivy, Mick, Arika, Scott, Kash, Kolby, Jack, Adam, and Ava. She loved and leaves behind her twin sister, Myrna Sprague of Endicott, along with Myrna’s husband Stan, and their children. She also predeceases her brothers Henry Harris, and Jerry and Sue Harris, both of Endwell.
Services will be held on Sunday, February 25 at Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott with calling hours from 3-5 pm, and funeral services beginning at 5 pm. Burial will be in Riverhurst Cemetery, Endicott Monday at 12 pm.
