Oudarone “Ron” Phetphongsy passed away tragically on November 21, 2019 at age 69. Born and raised in Vientiane, Laos, he was one of nine children born to Phet and Bouakham Khouphongsy.
As a freshman at the National University of Laos, he was recruited to play professional soccer and played for several teams, including on the Laos National Soccer team. He traveled the world playing soccer for five years, graduating from the University in 1971. Playing, coaching, and watching soccer were lifelong passions of his.
Ron’s greatest love, however, was his wife Sengkeo “Gail,” who he married in 1974. When the Laos government changed in 1975, the couple spent two years in a refugee camp and were forced to emigrate to the United States with their two year old son, Oukeo Anthony.
Through an unceasing work ethic, Ron rebuilt his life in Binghamton, NY. He landed a position at IBM as a copper plater, eventually becoming a chemical processor. He worked there for 38 years, through several iterations of the company.
Ron built a rich life in the U.S., welcoming another son, Outhong Michael, in 1981 and his baby girl, Catherine Dalynn, in 1985. He was surrounded by family and friends.
What people remember most about Ron were his stories, jokes, laughter and loving nature. He lit up a room, made everyone feel at ease, and was the life of every party. An excellent host, dancer, and entertainer, he was an unforgettable presence at every gathering. Ron was genuinely interested in everyone he met and was liked by everyone who met him.
Generous with his energy, resources, and hospitality, he could never say no to a family member or friend who needed help. He seemed to have an endless supply of kindness while also being attentive to Gail, his children, and grandchildren. Countless members of the community breathed easier because he was in their lives.
He was predeceased by parents Phet and Bouakham Khouphongsy and brother Daovone. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 45 years, Sengkeo “Gail,” his three children; Oukeo (Doungdara), Outhong (Pamela), Catherine, seven grandchildren; Kyle, Kaylee, Romeo, Kimora, Xavier, Adrianna, and Christian, seven brothers and sisters; Amkhone, Lammone, Souksakhone, Khamsone, Thavone, Phonekham, and Phouthone.
Oudarone Phetphongsy was a model family man and pillar of the community. He will be missed by many around the world and his generous spirit will never be forgotten.
His family invites you to join them for services on November 30 at noon at the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott.
