On Wednesday evening, March 16, 2016, Bob left us to go to the place that the Lord had prepared for him. He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Agnes, Endwell, NY, his three sons, Robert W., Esq., Binghamton, NY, William and his wife, Joanna, Sandy Hook, CT, and Patrick, Endwell, NY; and one daughter, Patricia Carey Cook, and her husband, Vincent, Endwell, NY; seven grandchildren, Jason, Alyssa and Trevor Carey, Brianna and Brett Carey, and Bradley and “Mary, Mary” Cook. Also surviving are his sister, Elizabeth Burns, Fort Pierce, FL and many caring brothers-and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. Bob was born on December 8, 1933 to Clara and Joseph Carey in the small amiable town of Forest City, PA. He graduated from Forest City High School and Bloomsburg State College. He taught school for two years in the Milford, PA school district. In November 1956 he was hired into the Employment and Placement Department at IBM in Endicott, NY, which was the beginning of a long and successful career. In April 1964 Bob was promoted to Personnel Planning Specialist at IBM Corporate Headquarters in Armonk, NY. In May 1965 he became the Employment and Placement Manager in Raleigh, NC. In April 1967, he was promoted to a second-level management position encompassing Recruitment General Employment and Placement at IBM Federal Systems (FSD) in Gaithersburg, MD. In November 1968 he was promoted to FSD Headquarters as Division Manager of Employment and Placement and then in July 1971 he was promoted to Division Employee Relations Manager, FSD. During November 1972, Bob was appointed as the Personnel Manager at IBM FSC/WMA in Gaithersburg, MD. He became the Personnel Manager at IBM FSD in Owego, NY in February 1973. After 37 years with IBM, Bob was employed with the Loral Corporation and Lockheed Martin Corporation in Owego, NY where he held the position of the Director of Personnel and later the Director of Site Services. Bob was an active supporter of the United Way and in 1993 served as the Broome County United Way President and Campaign Chairman. In retirement, Bob volunteered with the Broome County Council of Churches, Broome County Office for the Aging, and the Holy Name Society at Church of the Holy Family, where he was a faithful parishioner since 1973. Bob had a great sense of humor, was quick-witted and never at a loss for words. And then, silence dominated. Not the silence that is with the quiet of the dawn, nor the silence of the snow falling, but the forced silence from Alzheimer’s Disease. The family extends sincere appreciation for the compassionate care Bob received from Dr. Frank Floyd, Endwell, NY, and the Aides and Nurses at the Willow Point Nursing Home, Vestal, NY. You loved Bob’s smile and the twinkle in his eyes. His family thanks you all for providing excellent care in his final days.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 am at Church of the Holy Family, Endwell, NY. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street Endicott, Friday from 4-7 pm.
