Robert L. Emerson of Whitney Point, NY passed away peacefully Sunday February 1, 2015 at the Susquehanna Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at the age of 85. Bob (also known as Coach) was a teacher, a coach and a sports enthusiast. He dedicated his life to serving others and impacted many lives through his teaching and coaching. Even today, the people whose lives he touched still remember him fondly and credit him for making a difference in their lives. He started the football program at Maine Endwell in 1960 and was later inducted in the Maine Endwell High School Hall of Fame. After coaching at Maine Endwell, he moved on to coach at Sherburne, NY and then finished his career in Whitney Point where he coached football, basketball and baseball. Coach graduated from U-E in 1946, received his bachelor’s degree from Springfield College in 1952 and got his masters from Penn State in 1961 where he was a grad assistant with the football team. He was a loyal member of the Maine Masonic Lodge for over 60 years, a member of the Scottish Rite Consistory in Dallas Texas and a 32nd degree Mason. Bob was also a member of the American Legion post 974 in Whitney Point and a member of the Endicott Umpires Association where he umpired games until he was 80. Bob loved playing softball and golf. He also loved spending time with his six grandchildren, Julianne (11), Jenna (11), Rylee (11) and Sean Michael Zunic (9) and Nicole (13) and Sean William Emerson (8). Bob was predeceased by his wife Sylvia and is survived by his grandchildren and his three children and their spouses, his youngest Beth Ann Zunic and her husband Jay, Bobby and his oldest, Bill and his wife Marlene. A special thanks goes to the Castle Gardens Keepsake Village staff and more recently the Susquehanna Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the care they gave him during the last few years of his life. Bob will always be remembered fondly for his countless stories and for being a person who truly cared about people.
Funeral Services will be held Friday 11 am from the Allen Memorial Home 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott, with the Reverend Father Clarence Cerwonka Pastor of Most Holy Rosary Church, Maine officiating. Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home Thursday from 4-7 pm. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Alzheimer’s association, 401 Hayes Avenue, Endicott, NY 13760.
