Roger L. Thorp of Endwell passed away Tuesday, August 10th at Wilson Hospital following a cardiac arrest. He was 80 years old.
Roger was born April, 10th, 1941 in Jamestown, NY to Sophie (Biruk) and Clifton Thorp. After high school, he graduated with an advanced degree in Chemistry. The majority of his career was spent teaching in the Vestal School District as a middle school science teacher and then a high school Chemistry teacher.
He was a wonderful teacher who was extremely invested in his students. He always spoke of his students throughout his life and loved running into former students around town.
Roger was integral in establishing the AP and IB program at Vestal High and was known for taking out any student who achieved a perfect score on the Regents Exam for a steak dinner. The Science Olympiad was a passion of his and he loved working with the students on the team.
Hobbies also included gardening, photography and “collecting things”.
Roger is survived by his wife Penelope, his daughter Taia and her husband Zbigniew as well as two grandchildren Madeleine and Jeremy.. In addition, two sisters Judy (Steve) Johnson and Beverly Creed. Many, many cousins and nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home at 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott Monday, from 5-7 pm. Burial will be in Maine Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
Family requests the wearing of masks at the visitation.
