Shirley Simon

Shirley Ann Pisano Simon, 72, of Binghamton, NY, deeply cherished wife, mother, sister, and grandmother, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday evening, September 17, 2014, at the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital, in San Antonio, Texas. She was born to the late Fred and Mildred (Parulis) Pisano, on April 23, 1942, in Pittston, PA. She was predeceased by her sister, Nancy (Pisano) Piemontese. Shirley is survived by her beloved husband of 47 years, Theodore Simon, their three children: daughter Tammy (Timothy) Cappellett, Vestal, NY; daughter Suzanne (Rajul) Vaishnani, San Antonio, TX; and son David (Nicole) Simon, Boston, MA, and her seven grandchildren: Alexander and Emilia Cappellett; Sonia, Samir and Kaden Vaishnani; and Cooper and Whitney Simon. She is also survived by her brothers Charles (Betty) Pisano, Enola, PA; Frederick Pisano Jr., Pittston, PA; Anthony (Donna) Pisano, Moosic, PA; brother in law Frank Piemontese, Pittston, PA, and numerous nieces and nephews. Shirley was a graduate of Pittston High School and Wilkes Barre Business College and worked for the IRS in the Scranton/Wilkes Barre area until marrying Ted. The couple moved to the Binghamton, NY area and after a while Shirley returned to work for the IRS. While working and raising her family, Shirley went back to school and earned her paralegal degree from SUNY Broome. She then worked for Broome County and then worked for many years as a paralegal for Coughlin & Gerhart, L.L.P. Shirley was one of the founding members, and acting treasurer, of the Middle East Cultural Foundation. She dedicated endless amounts of time towards creating, preserving and enriching the Foundation’s cause. She was also an active member of the Greek Orthodox Church in Vestal, NY. Shirley loved to shop. She loved puzzles, ceramics and crafts, following politics, watching HGTV and cooking shows. She was active on her computer either “pinning” or posting positive affirmations on Facebook. Shirley was a gifted chef and baker who enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. She looked forward to her yearly Kiawah Island family vacations, surrounded by her husband, children and grandchildren. Above all she loved spending time with her family. Shirley’s generosity and love for others was unmatched. She led by a loving heart and always chose her family and friends before herself.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday 9:30 am from Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 1 Hellenic Circle, Vestal. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott, Tuesday from 4:30 to 7:30 pm with a Trisagion Service at 7:30 pm. The family will also receive friends at St Mary’s Antiochian Orthodox Church, 905 South Main Street, Wilkes Barre, PA at 10:30 am on Thursday, September 25, 2014. Burial will be in St Mary AO Cemetery, Wilkes Barre, PA. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Shirley may be made to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Vestal, NY, or St. Mary’s Antiochian Orthodox Church, Wilkes Barre, PA.
