Stephen Smas

d. July 26, 2015

Stephen Earley Smas, 72, passed July 26, 2015. Steve was born in Grassmere, NH on December 18, 1942 to Barbara and Stephen Smas. After high school, he joined the U S Air Force where he was an Airman 2nd class repairing jet engines. He married Sue Wargo and they raised three sons, Steven (Jenniffer) Smas, Haverhill NH., Scott (Jodi) Smas, Tempe AZ, and Sean (Megan) Smas, Piermont NH. Steve started his postal career in Freehold NJ in 1974. He then relocated to NH where he eventually was appointed the Postmaster of Monroe NH. As a postal employee, he started many stamp clubs for children, plus he became a numismatist. He also enjoyed “tinkering” with his 1939 Ford tractors, restoring them to peak performance. About five years after his wife passed away, he met and married Joan Koon and moved to Johnson City NY. Steve and Joan loved to travel and garden. Steve is survived by Joan; his brother, Sherrill (Bonnie) Smas, Blacksbury VA; his three sons and their wives, and his step-family, Mark (Wendy) Kosalek, Judi Comstock, Cris Ann (Mathew) Tryniski, and Kim Kosalek; plus his grandchildren, Katharine, Rebacca, Trevor, Connor; his step-grandchildren, Cody, Jackie, Liz, Tom, Brian, Eric, Conor, Megan, Ben, Maggie; and one great-grandchild, Naya Lyn. Steve has said, “I had a good run. Keep joy in your heart and make life easier for each other every day.” The family thanks Lourdes Hospice for their caring compassion.
A Celebration of Life will be held at his home at 12 noon on August 8, 2015. Those who wish to send remembrances may consider a memorial contribution to the Society for the Promotion of Education in Animal Kindness (SPEAK), 351 Flint Rd. Binghamton NY 13905.
