Susan Evans McLain of Endwell NY, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on August 28, 2024. She was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Ethel Evans. She is survived by her husband, Gerald D. McLain, son, Gerald Evans McLain, and daughter-in-law, Kimberly Bradford McLain.
A Cornell graduate, Susan spent 30 years teaching English at Union-Endicott High School. She was the first woman appointed to the Town of Union Planning Board and provided leadership for many years as the Planning Board Chair. Susan was passionate about gardening and became a Master Gardener in 2002, serving as the team lead for the Perennial Garden for many years, and then later, the Rose Garden. Sue leaves a legacy of her own beautiful garden that she carefully nurtured and which was featured in local garden tours. Sue was an active member of the American Association of University Women and spent time as the Education Foundation Chair, photographer, and Website Manager. She was also a member of ELOCA and spent time serving as the co-treasurer of the Opening Belles Investment Club. In 2008, Sue was honored by the Broome County Status of Women Council as a Woman of Achievement, a testament to her many years of leadership and service. She was an avid photographer, documenting her many trips, including one to Antarctica, and was known for her clever Christmas cards featuring her beloved dogs. Susan was a loving wife and mother and beloved mother-in-law. She was a woman of grace and dignity and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
The family will receive friends at Allen Memorial Home, located at 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott, on Wednesday, September 4 from 11:30 AM until 1:00 PM, at which time a memorial service will be performed. Interment will be at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 5 at Uniondale Cemetery in Uniondale, PA.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Susan’s memory may be made to Friends of Cutler Botanic Garden, located at 840 Front St, Binghamton, NY 13905.
