Steven Victor Czarnecki was a man of integrity who loved knowledge and pursued many interests. Born in Chicago in 1956, Steve and his loving wife Christine moved to Apalachin, NY, in 1983, where they shared 42 years of marriage filled with St. Bernards, sunsets, campfires, Corvette cruises, and a shared love of music.
Steve passed away unexpectedly on September 26, 2024, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Saddened are the many people who knew and loved him as an intelligent, funny, hard-working, dependable, and generous polymath and audiophile.
Steve was the son of Leon and Elfriede (Martus) Czarnecki. He is survived by his devoted wife, Christine (Magel) Czarnecki. He is also survived by his three siblings, Anita Sheridan, Paul (Denise) Czarnecki, and John Czarnecki; his brother-in-law Frank (Laura) Magel; nieces and nephews Zachary, Forrest (Bailey), Maia, Cade, Leeann, and Kaitlin; and Goddaughter, Catherine. Over the years, Steve and Chris shared their love with twelve loyal St. Bernards: Norman, Martha, Petey, Minnie, Lydia, Miller, Columbus, Isabella, Meena, Suzy-Q, Winston, and Abby.
Steve graduated from Forest View High School (1974). He earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from General Motors Institute (Kettering University) in 1979. Steve then studied at Princeton University, NJ, earning two Master's Degrees (1980, 1981) and a PhD (1983) in Electrical Engineering.
Steve's professional journey was equally remarkable. He dedicated his career to IBM Owego/Lockheed Martin, where he held several patents, and retired in 2013 as the Director of Advanced Technology. He then spent ten years at Binghamton University as the S3IP Center of Excellence Associate Director. His career culminated with a consulting role at Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) in Durham, NC, as the SMART USA Membership Manager. Steve was a member of Theta Xi Fraternity, The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Binghamton University Industrial Advisory Board throughout his career.
