William A. Zimmerman

April 20, 1925 — February 7, 2013

Dr. William A. Zimmerman was born on April 20, 1925, the son of William and Mollie (Hartman) Zimmerman, in Scranton, PA. He was predeceased by his son, Carl and William’s older brother, Robert. He received his Bachelor’s (cum laude), Master’s and Doctor of Education Degrees from Syracuse University. A veteran of the European Theatre in World War II, he served as an Infantry Scout with the 20th Armored division and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the NYS Conspicuous Service Cross, and a number of campaign medals. In his long career in public education, “Dr. Z.” served as the first Secondary School Principal at the newly constituted Shenendehowa Central School District in Saratoga County, N.Y. He was also Superintendent of the Wheatland-Chili District in Monroe County and of the Mt. Pleasant District in Westchester County. In 1970 he became Superintendent of the Union-Endicott School District and was named Superintendent Emeritus upon his retirement in 1985. He served as Interim Superintendent for the Greene Central and the Vestal Central School Districts. “Dr. Z.” was the author of over a dozen articles which were published in education journals. He served as a Visiting Professor at Syracuse University and as an Adjunct Professor at New York University and at State University of New York at Cortland. Active in community affairs, Dr. Zimmerman served on the Board of Directors of Broome United Way, WSKG Public TV/Radio Station, and the Roberson Museum of Arts and Science. He served as President of Endicott Rotary Club and was named a Paul Harris Fellow. As a volunteer, he enjoyed his service as an Elderhostel Ambassador. He was a long-time member of the Central United Methodist Church, Endicott. Bill was a devoted family man with many diverse interests and talents including singing, snow skiing, tennis, photography, love for the State of Maine, travel to National Parks, and enjoying life as a “snowbird”. He is survived by Esther his beloved wife of 58 years, son, Alan (Anita) of Apex, NC; three grandchildren, Heather and Aaron of NC and George (Alison) Gori of Newport News, VA.; and two great grandchildren, Anthony and Lauryn Gori of Wilmington, NC.Memorial Services will be held Wednesday at 2 pm from the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott, with Pastor Mark Marino officiating. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home Wednesday from 1 pm, until time of service at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Endicott Rotary Club Foundation, P.O. Box 427, Endicott, NY 13760.
